On January 24th, Gerard Way released his cover of “Hazy Shade of Winter” in support of the upcoming release of the live-action Netflix show “The Umbrella Academy”. The show is an adaption of the Eisner Award-winning comic series of the same name, written by Way & illustrated by Gabriel Bá.The cover features friend and former My Chemical Romance bandmate Ray Toro, a surprising but exciting pairing for fans. The cover was dropped in sync with Gerard’s bid to release monthly musical content, keeping fans on their toes. “A Hazy Shade of Winter,” originally released in 1968 by musical duo Simon & Garfunkel, was also covered by The Bangles in 1987. Gerard’s cover, drawing from The Bangles’ version, is featured in the trailer for The Umbrella Academy Way’s eerie but biting vocals, matched with a gritty guitar lead and fast pace gave the trailer it’s suspense. The release of the cover relit the fire of fan excitement for Way’s musical career considering his previous prioritization of comics over music. With “The Umbrella Academy” set for release, fans are excited to finally see the outcome of the adaptation and are hoping for more music from Way.
