A Will Away – The Sinclair – 7.18.17

A Will Away
Cambridge, MA – 7.18.17

A Will Away made their way back to New England on their run with Dryjacket and This Wild Life, where they finally got the chance to swoon Boston again with their euphoric alt-rock sound. Their last Boston show (with Moose Blood, Trophy Eyes, and Boston Manor) was cancelled due to weather, so it was great to catch them over at The Sinclair supporting another solid tour.

The band opened up with the title track to their debut full-length Here Again, starting the night off strong with its hypnotic guitar intro. As if their music didn’t already have the crowd engaged, frontman Matt Carlson asked for a show of hands of “who here hates their job”—which ultimately had every one up in the air—before breaking into “Pay Raise”. They played a very solid set of fan-favorites from Bliss and Here Again, but a personal highlight was their performance of “Chemicals”/“Crotchet”, which are my two favorites off of Here Again.

What I have always found the most alluring about A Will Away is their fortitude to tackle such intangible topics of life with their music. Their songs are lyrically inquisitive, introspective, and sincere—traits that I feel are often lost in the newer waves of bands coming through. Songs like “Into The Light” and “Gravity”, which were also amongst their set list of the night, can either give you a glimpse into their own perspectives or have you meandering around in your own.

For a band that already creates such intricate music, they are some of the most skilled performers in this scene as well. They had performed a headlining show in Westfield, MA the night before, though there were no signs of exhaustion or lapse. Every time I have seen A Will Away live, it’s like listening to the studio album but even more honest. Their precision and attention to detail are as present during their performances as they are evident in their writing. Above it all, you can see their passion spilling from the stage.

A Will Away still has some dates left on this tour with This Wild Life, as well as some more headlining shows “on the road home.” If they’re hitting a spot near you (or even if they’re not—road trip!), I highly suggest making it out, especially if you’ve yet to see them live.
