The nostalgia was real on Thursday night when Aly & AJ brought the Sanctuary Tour to Fort Lauderdale. The sister-duo hit the stage, which was decorated minimally with flower bouquets and bar lights, at 9 p.m. The pair opened their set with “Church,” the first track off of their newest EP, Sanctuary. A perfect blend of new and old, Aly & AJ curated a setlist that kept the crowd moving through the night. However, when an old track was played, the room roared in excitement like no other. There were no exclusions from the set, as the sisters played tracks from Insomniatic (2007), Into The Rush (2005) and Ten Years (2018). They owned the stage like no other, and the 18 track performance still left the audience reeling for more.
It was obvious that majority of the crowd in attendance grew up with the sisters from their days on Disney Channel, but that didn’t mean that they didn’t know their new material. Enthusiastically singing along, the crowd knew every word to every song - even the ones on the then-unreleased EP, which was released shortly after the show ended that night. The older tracks were performed with a more mature sound that matches Aly & AJ’s current musical sound, but not too much that it took away from the nostalgic vibe of the decade-old songs. Of course, there was no better way to wrap up the night with any song other than the iconic hit, “Potential Breakup Song.” I can’t wait to see what these girls have in store in the future, and I’m even more excited for whenever they return back to South Florida. Do not miss this show, especially without listening to their new EP. You’ll regret it if you do.
