CHVRCHES - New Haven, CT - 7.9.19

Following up with a new leg of their Love Is Dead support tour that began last fall, CHVRCHES has continued to sweep our nation by storm with their infectious synths and stunningly eerie production. Making tour stops and festival appearances in cities they didn’t previously reach, the band made their College Street Music Hall debut this past Tuesday in New Haven, CT with support from the ever-angsty and always-vibrant Speedy Ortiz

There is always so much to be said about a Chvrches show. They’re known for their incredibly bright and colorful stage productions, as well as frontwoman Lauren Mayberry’s eclectic fashion and playful twirls. Now, add in their impressively diverse set list and comical stage banter between songs, and you can see why Chvrches has been headlining festivals and selling out venues since The Bones of What You Believe’s beginning (2013). The band played fan-favorites from throughout the years--such as “Recover”, “Clearest Blue”, and “Miracle”--and deep cuts--”We Sink” and “Science/Visions”--while still keeping the purpose of the tour in tact--supporting Love Is Dead, of course!

Something we at Acentric feel is important to mention is Chvrches’ (and show support Speedy Ortiz’s, for that matter) constant fight for justice and acceptance. As you may have heard countless times on the radio, Chvrches and electronic icon Marshmello collaborated on a song earlier this year. As you may have also heard, Chvrches spoke out against the DJ star for his subsequent collaboration with Chris Brown, the legendary hip-hop artist now well known for his dangerously abusive acts. Though we admit “Here With Me” is a certified banger, we commend the band for their integrity in a music industry where things consistently get swept under the rug. They faced horrendous backlash on social media for taking a stand, but we can count on Chvrches for always fighting for what they know to be just.

All in all, Chvrches are a must-see band for any pop/electronic music lover that wants to go to a live show and just truly live in the moment and enjoy themselves. Though this current Love Is Dead tour has just ended with their last show last night in Louisville, KY, we know in our hearts this won’t be the last time we see the illustrious group in The States. So, until next time, Chvrches!
