What You Can Expect At This Year's OctFest

The beer-food-music extravaganza, better known as OctFest, will be held this September 8th and 9th on Governor’s Island in NYC. The festival features 90+ international craft breweries, an exciting musical line-up, and a specially-curated food program. With so much going on all weekend long, it’ll be hard to decipher what to do and what to try. We’ll break down some of the festival highlights for you so you can start to plan your priority list, but don’t be surprised if your plans change upon arrival--it’s going to be a jam-packed weekend!

One of the major highlights of any festival is, of course, the food vendors. The award-winning (and most popular Facebook video sharing) food-lifestyle brand Bon Appétit has curated one of the most diverse and enticing food line-ups we’ve seen all year. OctFest is bringing us literal heaven on earth with their “Food Village”, which will house several local NYC restaurants throughout the weekend. Places like Roberta’s, Sweet Chick, and STUF’D Truck will be our quick-serve heroes, while places like Cervo’s, Best Pizza, and KronnerBurger will be serving us some wordly specialties in celebration of the festival’s international beer line-up. There will be plenty to choose from for whatever you’ll be craving, like maybe Mission Chinese Food for lunch followed by OddFellows Ice Cream Co. for dessert (we’re really hoping they bring that Thai Iced Tea flavor to the festival grounds).

As we mentioned previously, this year’s line-up has a solid 50/50 ratio of male-female performers while showcasing a great genre diversity as well. We’re excited to catch as many acts as we possibly can, but artists at the top of our “must watch” list are certainly Hop Along, Girl Pool, and Sunday-night headliners The Flaming Lips. The festival will hold two stages with a total of 20 bands (10 each day), alternating sets starting from 1pm to roughly 10pm both days. You can check out the full line-up and schedule per day here.

]Breweries from roughly 20 different countries will be on site, pouring roughly 250 varieties of beers throughout the weekend. Even if you aren’t too keen on beer, you’ll be fascinated by just how many beers and breweries there are from around the world. On the top of our list will definitely be some of the local breweries like Brooklyn’s Braven Brewing Company (try saying that three times fast) and Northport’s Sand City Brewing Co. to show some support to the home turf. However, we’re the most intrigued by some of the breweries from across the globe, like South Korea’s The Hand & Malt Brewery and Spain’s Laugar Brewery. It’s going to be hard to pick our favorite come festival time.

So, what’s the best way to get the most out of the festival weekend, you ask? Give yourself a break, don’t count those calories, and grab a plate of everything you can. Check out the artists you love, and maybe some artists you never heard of. Sample all of the beers--if that’s even possible with just how many breweries that’ll be present. Enjoy yourself, it’s almost the best time of the year!

Tickets are still available at OctFest.co. Single-day passes are $75 and weekend passes are $140, including 15 beer samples per day.
