KAABOO Del Mar 2018 Artist To Watch: Creature Canyon
Creature Canyon is the collaborative brainchild of Southern California natives Austin Steele, Ryan Amyot, and Kyle Victoria
The band’s debut single “Life I Know” garnered initial attention from legendary San Diego alternative radio station 91X, where the song quickly entered daily rotation. The airplay led them to receive the locally-coveted status of 91X’s “local break” artist, which opened doors to supporting alt-legends Empire Of The Sun, Phoenix, and several others at the 91X’s ‘X-Fest 2017’. “Life I Know” has also enjoyed airplay on Los Angeles’ world renowned rock station KROQ
The band kicked off 2018 by recording in LA’s distinguished United Recording Studios and plans to spend the year rolling out new music from their forthcoming EP titled Did You Want That, available everywhere October 19th, 2018.
We had the chance of chatting with singer-songwriter Austin Steel about their latest single, upcoming EP, and long-awaited show on KAABOO Del Mar Festival
You had a new single coming up last Friday, what can you tell me about it?
The song is called "Did you Want That" and is the title track of the EP.
Tell me about this song, What is the story behind it?
This song was pretty much written about a self-reflection with myself. Questioning 'did you want that' so the lyrics came up from an improv jam. I liked the way I was singing it, I liked the rhythm so I based [everything] around that 'did you want that' phrase. It is pretty much about a post-relationship, about how you long for the other person or think about a person in all different ways. The reason behind all that stuff and the chorus 'with your mind in my head, will it fade away?' [is about] trying to move on, trying to start again and all that stuff [with] relationships.
Is this kind of the theme for the EP coming out in October? Around that 'Did you want that' and post-relationship?
Well, with most of the lyrics it is a bit of a relationship love affair EP. There's love, there are highs, there are lows, there's bitterness, there's infatuation, mistakes. It really has some in-depth relationship stuff. I think people will be able to relate to and it comes from personal experience.
I think that's really great to have that sort of connection.
Of course! Sometimes is hard to write songs when maybe you feel so horrible and fresh and it's sometimes hard to tap into that. I think for me [when] writing songs sometimes I have to reflect a while, then I can carry my thoughts and then actually write something. Sometimes emotions can be everything, sporadic and anxious. I think I can really get away with my thoughts and then I can really reflect and tap into stuff like that.
Isn't that the sole purpose of writing music? To express yourself and get everything out there.
Yeah, of course. Writing is everything to me. Its an outlet rather than being destructive. Which there is an easy way of doing it. You can easily be destructive. I think there's just a positive way of reflecting and have an outlet. Art in general. Everyone can get into music. I don't think there's one person who's like 'agh I don't like to music'. Maybe they don't listen to it a lot but, I don't think there hasn't been a person who hasn't connected to a song.
Definitely! I don't think there's anyone who hasn't connected with any form of art.
Oh yeah. I love what I do. It keeps the wheels turning and makes life great and exciting. I'm really happy with the band. We've been working hard and we are really excited about the release and everything [has] been really good. Being a musician is not easy and not an easy career to do. There's a lot of doubt. You can go to med school and become a doctor and that's so hard to do. I don't have that type of brains, to do that, but I'm proud of myself sticking with it. I've been doing it for a while now and I don't think I'll ever give up doing music.
How long have you've been playing music?
I started playing music when I was twelve and playing guitar and I haven't quit ever since.
]You are from San Diego, How excited are you to get to be on this year's KAABOO Del Mar Line up? Now that is getting to be one of the biggest festivals of the area.
