Staff Picks Playlist: 80's Favorites

The 80's is full of classics, and overall great songs that everyone can relate to. This week’s Staff Picks Playlist features our 80's Favorites, we hope to introduce you to sounds you’ve never heard before and create nostalgia for the tunes you do know.

“Don't You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds My mom introduced me to the wonderful world of 80s movies very early in my life. Hell, I was named after Samantha from Sixteen Candles. This song is a classic and is featured in so many movies from the 80s, and it will surely be stuck in your head after reading this blurb. You’re welcome. Don't forget to walk through a field and fist bump in the middle of the song! (Sam Lichtenstein, Photographer)

“Square Biz” by Teena Marie You can’t go wrong with anything from Teena Marie! She’s the kind of artist whose songs you don’t skip and Square Biz is one of my favorite songs from her <3. Also her little freestyle at the end is a goodie. (Krystina Gabrielle, Photographer)

“Faithfully” by Journey I was an obsessive Journey and Steve Perry fan around 2008-2012, being that weird kid who refused to be mainstream. It was very hard to decide the pick that would be best for this list. My more obscure picks would actually have to be After the Fall by Journey from the Frontiers album or Strung Out from Steve Perry’s first solo album Street Talk, but there’s some real sentimental strength behind this ultimate 80’s arena rock ballad. Long live rocking out dramatically in your car when you’re driving alone, and long live Journey. (Melanie Kim, Lifestyle Photo Editor)

“Jack & Diane” by John Mellencamp Oh the Eighties, what a time to be alive. Music, movies and fashion were all on point, and this song displays it perfectly. It's fun and upbeat, while essentially acting as a time machine as it whisks you away to a simpler time. (Dayna Drum, Managing Editor)

“Break My Stride” by Matthew Wilder The year 1983 was a year full of groundbreaking history – Return of The Jedi came out in theatres, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ went #1 on the Billboard charts, and Matthew Wilder released “Break My Stride”, an iconic, happy go lucky song that gets me moving instantly. Whether it be on a long drive (it’s pretty funny to listen to while you’re stuck in bumper to bumper traffic) or just cleaning my house, this song always adds a lot of pep into my step whenever I listen to it. It’s definitely on my playlist of songs to get me through Monday blues! (Idora Yasin, Photographer)

“Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)” by David Bowie As a weirdo, I love everything by the that can be defined as “weird.” As it’s Halloween, I thought this was the perfect 80's throwback. Full disclosure: I listen to this all year long, not just at halloween, and I also maybe pretend to be a monster. (Deanna Soukiasian, Writer)

“Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler Knowing this song is a prerequisite to me starting a friendship with anyone. I need someone who knows all the parts and can hold it down when we’re singing a karaoke duet–interpretive dancing included. Even better if you know the literal version of the song because that means immediate friendship. All jokes aside, this song is a jam. Only the Bonnie Tyler version though. None of those weird remixes they try to play on the radio… Lookin’ at you KOST 103.5. Musically, it starts off soft and then breaks out into the amazing chorus, which is basically the recipe to a great 80s pop song, right? Plus, it just keeps building and has weird whoosh sounds and thunder crashes. Can you say “EPIC”? (Angelica Nicolle Abalos, Editor in Chief).
