Staff Picks Playlist: Party Tunes

Everyone needs the perfect party playlist to get up, let loose, and dance to. This week’s Staff Picks Playlist features our favorite Party Tunes, we hope to introduce you to sounds you’ve never heard before and create nostalgia for the tunes you do know.

“24k Magic” by Bruno Mars Bruno Mars is back and his first single is literally my party jam for the weekend. How can you not want to get up and dance! The magic is in the air whenever it comes on and I hope that this song makes you wanna move. (Camille Wilcher, Social Media Coordinator)

“We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus Even though it’s on the slower side, I secretly wish for We Can’t Stop to be played at every function I go to. It’s easy to dance to, catchy, and it’s musically unique enough not to be a cookie-cutter pop song. Everyone seems to get hyped up when this song comes on, so naturally it’d be my party pick. (Briana McDonald, Writer)

“The Way You Make Feel” by Michael Jackson If anyone is bringing the party it's definitely the King himself. This is an instant classic that gets the groove going and your crowd singing along. Never mind the fact that the video is Jackson and his friends essentially harassing this poor girl (with killer hair) in the middle of the street. Besides that, this is the jam. (Dayna Drum, Managing Editor)

“My Type” by Saint Motel Already liked this song but seeing it performed at Firefly this past summer was a good time, plus Saint Motel put on a great show. I love the horns and just catchy feel of the song. I'll be seeing Saint Motel in DC this week too so I'm excited to hear more from them. (Krystina Gabrielle, Photographer)

“Yeah!” by Usher This song will always be the jam. Maybe it’s because this song is by three hip hop kings of the early 2000s: Usher, Lil Jon and Ludacris. Or maybe it’s because literally any song Usher puts out is a dance track. Then again, maybe it’s out of pure nostalgia that I always pick this song. Regardless of the reason–though, does this song really need one?–no matter what, as soon as this song hits the speakers at the club, you KNOW it's about to get lit. (Angelica Nicolle Abalos, Editor in Chief)

“Dancing King” by EXO This is a difficult decision. Hundreds of songs make up my hype playlist, but once again I'll choose something foreign and recent. “Dancing King” features the Korean band EXO and the Korean actor Yoo JaeSuk. It's a poppy fun song guaranteed to make you want to dance with the brass influence and quick paced beat. Further into the song during the chorus it contains saxophone styled sounds, similar to what you hear in “Talk Dirty” by Jason Derulo. If I had to describe this song in one word it would be “fun.” (Catherine Streng, Writer)

“Want to Want Me” by Jason Derulo This one’s been out for a little while now, but I still love the feel good, wholesome pop beat and Jason Derulo’s sensitive side. I don't party much, so as far as I'm concerned, if it gets me moving, it belongs on this list. (Melanie Kim, Lifestyle Photo Editor)

“Night Drive” by All-American Rejects I've been on an All-American Rejects kick for the last week or so naturally, I'm going to pick an All-American Rejects’ song. Night Drive isn't exactly a party song, but it's my go to song when I have a long drive ahead of me. Gets me pumped for the road! (Brianna Stacy, Photographer)

“Shut Up and Dance” by Walk The Moon This song creates the party wherever it is and it's instructional. Just do as it says and voila, dance party. I always have to hit replay at least once every time I listen. It's got such a catchy tune and it's so upbeat it's hard to be anything but in a party mood when this one is on. Plus, the line "discotheque Juliet teenage dream" is honestly poetic. (Shannon Dodson, Staff Writer).
